ASPARAGINASE

Asparaginase is used to treat several types of cancer of the blood. A chemical known as asparaginase is necessary for all cells to stay alive. Cancer cells are not able to make this chemical. It is available in the form of injection.

Before Using This Medication

The following should be considered before using this medication:

Allergies: Consult the health care providers, if one has an allergic reaction to this drug before taking it.

Breast-feeding: In some cases, it may cause serious side effects while using this drug. This medication is not recommended if someone is breast-feeding a baby.

Pregnancy: Do not take this medication if one is pregnant or if one is plan to become pregnant. If someone becomes pregnant during taking this medication, tell the health care provider immediately.

Other health problems: The presence of other medical diseases may affect the use of these medicines. If one has any other health conditions, tell the doctor, especially:

  • Kidney disease
  • Shingles
  • Gout
  • Chickenpox
  • Pancreatitis
  • Liver disease

Proper use of this medication

The dose of this medication is taken by vein under the skin. The right amount of the dose is prescribed by the doctor. Patient should keep it away from the children.

Side effects of asparginase

  • Stomach pain
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Joint pain
  • Itching or skin rash
  • Problems in breathing
  • Headache
  • Unusual bleeding
  • Swelling of lower legs or feet
  • Depression, drowsiness or tiredness
