Cyclophosphamide

Cyclophosphamide is very effective to treat different types of cancer such as ovarian cancer, breast cancer and other autoimmune diseases. The liver converts this medicine into two chemicals such as phosphoramide and acrolein. This medication is available in tablets and injection. Patients can take a tablet with full glass of water by mouth or it can be given by injection into a vein. The growth of cancer cells are decreased or stopped by this medication.

What are the possible side effects of Cyclophosphamide?

Common side effects of medicine may include:

  • Thickened and darkened skin
  • Loss body weight or loss of appetite
  • Brittle or thinned hair
  • Acne or blistering skin

Other side effects of this drug:

  • Excessive fatigue
  • Mouth blistering
  • Black stools
  • Pain during urination or urine in red color
  • Unusual bleeding or bruising
  • Fever or chills
  • Problems in breathing
  • Swelling of the ankles or feet

Precautions

Patient should follow the following before using this medication:

  • If one has kidney disease, tell the health care provider before taking this drug.
  • Tell pharmacist and health care provider what nonprescription and prescription one is using especially vitamins and aspirin.
  • If one is allergic to this medicine or any other medicines tell the pharmacist or doctor immediately.

Storage of Cyclophosphamide

People should store this drug at room temperature. Keep it away out of reach of babies and children. Throw away outdated drugs.
