CARBOPLATIN

Carboplatin belongs to the class of drugs called by alkylating agents. This drug is very effective to treat the cancer of the ovaries. It is also useful to treat other forms of cancer, which are determined by the health care providers. The growth of cancerous cells is destroyed by this medicine. It is also affected the normal body cells. Carboplatin is available in the form of injection and given into a vein.

Before Taking This Drug

The following should be considered by the patients before taking this medicine:

Allergies

If someone has allergic reaction to this medicine or other drugs, tell the health care providers as soon as possible.

Breast feeding  

This medicine has some serious side effects; therefore do not use it while breast-feeding a baby.

Children and adults

There is no any information about use of this drug in children. It is advisable that do not take this medicine to children. For other adults, they may experience tingling or numbness in toes or fingers or blood problems while taking this medicine.

Pregnancy

This medication is not recommended for pregnant women. Make sure that the health care provider knows if someone is pregnant or if one has plan to become pregnant, before receiving this medication.

Possible side effects of this drug

  • Lowered resistance to infection
  • Bleeding or Bruising
  • Vomiting and nausea
  • Low number of blood cells
  • Weakness and tiredness
  • Loss of appetite

Less common side effects

  • Changes in hearing
  • Tingling or numbness in feet or hands
  • Changes in taste
  • Diarrhea
  • Hair loss

Precautions while taking this medicine

  • Be careful when using a regular dental floss, toothbrush and toothpick.
  • If someone feels bleeding, blood in urine or pinpoint red spots on the skin, tell the doctor immediately.
  • Avoid people with infections.
  • Do not touch the inside of nose or eyes.
