ALIMTA

ALIMTA is used for the treatment of patients with metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (this cancer affects the malignant cells form in the tissues of the lung). This medicine is a treatment for malignant pleural mesothelioma (this cancer affects the chest cavity) and given with another anti-cancer drug cisplatin. Patients should also take vitamin B12 and folic acid with ALIMTA. A corticosteroid is also prescribed by the doctor during treatment with ALIMTA. This drug is not given to children.

How is ALIMTA given?

  • This drug is given by injection into a vein. ALIMTA is usually received by the doctor, one time in every three weeks.
  • This medication is also given in combination with another anti-cancer medicine cisplatin.
  • It is very necessary to take vitamin B12 during the treatment with this medicine.
  • Regular blood tests will be performed by the doctor before and during treatment with ALIMTA.

What are the possible side effects of this medicine?

  • Stomach upset, including vomiting, diarrhea and nausea.
  • Low red blood cells
  • Low blood cells counts
  • Low white blood cells
  • Tiredness
  • Throat, lip or mouth sores
  • Low platelets
  • Rash or itching
  • Loss of appetite and weight
